Tonya Russell-Former Head Start Child

Tonya Russell attended a Head Start program in Newton County as a young child. She went on to be successful in high school and college. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Arkansas Tech University. She held several corporate and retail positions before switching to the early childhood field in 1993. At Child Development, Inc., she served as an Even Start/HIPPY Coordinator. Tonya was the very first Collaboration Director for the Arkansas Head Start State Collaboration Office. In this position, she became the voice for Head Start and was instrumental in improving the image of Head Start at the state level. She worked tirelessly on the issues that affected the children and families served by Head Start. Since then, she has served as the Head Start Director for Community Action Program in Central Arkansas and the UAMS Head Start Program. Tonya is currently the Director of the Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education at the Arkansas Department of Human Services where she works to ensure the availability of high-quality early childhood opportunities for the children and families and Arkansas. The Head Start Community is very proud of Tonya’s achievements and the impact she has made on the lives of all children and families.
